Catechist Appreciation Dinner

2012 date to be announced

Eight “Be Cs” for Effective Catechesis
By Sr. Marie Roccapriore, MPF
1. Be Christ-centered
2. Be Clear
3. Be Consistent
4. Be Concrete
5. Be Creative
6. Be Compassionate
7. Be Charitable
8. Be Catechetical

1. To be Christ-centered is to reflect our own personal love for Christ and to reflect God’s love for the children.

2. To be clear is to be simple and concise in our teaching. Simplicity comes from being prepared. We need to be direct and to know our subject matter.

3. To be consistent, develop a general pattern for teaching so that most of the time children know what to expect. Variety is important too, but so is repetition. In fact, repetition is essential to learning. So don’t be afraid to repeat.

4. To be concrete is to use lots of examples, to relate whatever one is teaching to the world the child knows.

5. To be creative is to use one’s imagination and other personal gifts in one’s teaching and to draw on the imagination and personal gifts of the children.

6. To be compassionate is to care about each child, to allow for individual differences as well as class needs, to be patient.

7. To be charitable is to be kind, to anticipate children’s needs, to give them the opportunity to grow in charity themselves by cultivating in them thoughtfulness of others.

8. To be catechetical is to be evangelistic. To catechize or evangelize is to reach out not only to the children, but through them to their families. Every lesson should incorporate prayer, Bible, liturgy, and doctrine.

Sr. Marie Roccapriore is DRE, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Meriden, CT.
Message to Catechists from Maria Christie
Dear Catechists, thank you so much for answering the call to ‘Echo’ the good news and become an elementary catechist at Assumption parish.  Staff, parents, grandparents and parishioners greatly value and appreciate the time, effort and sacrifices you make on a weekly basis to teach the children of Assumption.  I always hold each of you in my prayers.  By your stewardship, you show all of us and your own family that you value faith formation.

At the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus said: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations."  Thank you for answering the call and following Jesus.  We are blessed to have you here.

The job itself is not with out its gifts to you!  Your rewards will truly be out of this world.  You will learn more about the Catholic faith, your own faith will come alive, and you get to meet really cool faith based people and its fun!

Sincerely in Christ,
Maria

Volunteer to be a Catechist

If you feel called to be a catechist please contact Maria Christie at 835-3133 or via email at maria@assumptionmidland.org.  You will be enrolled in the church's Charter for the protection of Children and Youth: this includes a three hour Virtus class (with ongoing email updates from the virtus website.)  Prospective Catechists also will have their background checked and be asked to sign a Standards of behavior document as part of the Charter and our commitment to providing a safe environment for children. As well as teaching children you will deepen your own faith and truly enjoy working with young children and other catechists.  Volunteer form.

We will have openings for the 2011-2012 school year.
